Key Stages 1 & 2

The National Curriculum consists of three core subjects: English, Mathematics, Science and seven foundation subjects: Design and Technology, Information and Communication Technology, History, Geography, Art and Design, Music, Physical Education.  The school curriculum is made up of the ten National Curriculum subjects, Religious Education, Personal Social and Health Education and Citizenship. When the children leave at the end of Year 4, curriculum information on each child is passed to the middle school to help make the transition as smooth as possible.

Curriculum Organisation

The school has a long-term plan, or scheme of work, with built in assessment, for each curriculum area to ensure:
  • children receive a broad and balanced curriculum;
  • continuity and progress in learning across year groups, building on what has gone before.
We make provision for more able children and for children with Special Educational Needs.
Subjects are timetabled and taught separately.  Where appropriate, linked aspects of two or more subjects are taught in the same unit of work.  Teachers aim to teach Literacy, Numeracy and ICT across the curriculum.
Whole-class teaching is used for all subjects.  Children are grouped and taught by ability for aspects of Literacy and Mathematics and in aspects of other subjects.  In Years 2, 3 and 4 children are taught in three ability sets for mathematics.  In Year 3 and 4 we have additional sets for Literacy.
Information of a more detailed nature on the school’s curriculum is available in school for all parents to consult.  What follows is a brief description of the curriculum areas offered in school.
