Reception
We admit children in September of the school year in which they reach the age of five.
Most of the children begin main school, having attended our Nursery unit. Nursery and Reception teachers liaise closely to ensure teaching builds on what the children already know and can do.
In the second half of the summer term before they start Reception class, the children visit their new classroom and teacher for a short time each week. This helps them settle in very quickly when they start school. An introductory evening is organised for parents of new starters in June.
The Reception teachers work closely together in their planning. The classes are supported by experienced teaching assistants. The Reception curriculum is planned around the six areas of learning:
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
- Communication, Language and Literacy
- Mathematical
- Knowledge and Understanding of the World
- Physical Development
- Creative Development
laying secure foundations for future learning. By the end of Reception class, most children will have reached the early learning goals and some will have exceeded the goals.
Teacher assess children’s progress in each area of learning. The profile of progress is shared with parents at the consultation meetings. Parents are given a report of their child’s achievements in July.
