Science
Children are encouraged to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding of science through focused practical first hand exploration, experimentation and investigation of:
Life Process and Living Things, based on animals and plants in the local environment and on children learning about their own bodies and how to keep them healthy.
Materials: Children learn to compare, group and classify everyday materials such as wood, aluminium, plastic, and paper and learn about their uses. They learn about different changes that occur in materials for instance when they are heated or cooled.
Physical Processes: Children learn about electricity, making simple circuits using batteries, bulbs, wires, and buzzers. They investigate forces and motion in terms of speed and direction. They investigate the everyday effects of light and sound.
Children are taught investigative skills, how to observe and make measurements. They learn to make predictions, to compare observations with expectations and to use results to draw conclusions. They are helped to develop an awareness of the relevance of science to their personal health and in their everyday life. They are taught that living things and the environment need to be treated with care and sensitivity.
