Location
The school is situated in the northern part of Ashington. Ashington is an easydrive from Newcastle upon Tyne and the Metro Centre at Gateshead which offer the full range of high street shopping, social and cultural activites. Locations within easy reach include the Northumberland coastline and castles. Children are drawn from a varied catchment area, predominantly growing new housing developments. Numbers applying for free school meals are low, less than 8.5%. The school is known for its friendly and caring environment. |

Main Entrance
The main entrance to the school is through the KS2 playground. Please follow the signs. There is no parking for visitors on the school premises. Anyone visiting the school is asked to park on the limited space on Wansbeck Road. We would ask you to park courteously to our neighbours and note that some of the streets and lanes around school are residents only. A large car parking area can be found at the leisure centre a short walk from school. |
Buildings & Grounds
Wansbeck First is a very popular school, providing a high standard of education for children age 3-9 years. The school, originally built in 1932, has been substantially modernised, refurbished and redecorated. The shape of the building is an ‘E’ with a key stage on each corridor. When the school was first erected it was two separate buildings, a link corridor was built in 2003 creating one building. The school has 3 separate playgrounds; the school has a courtyard with a wildlife area which is used to support the curriculum. |
Facilities
We have a large nursery area, 12 classrooms in the main building and one mobile classroom in the KS1 yard. We have an ICT suite with 18 PC’s and two sets of mobile laptop units to support ICT across the curriculum. Every classroom has an ICT basic pack consisting of interactive whiteboard, digital cameras and scanner. We have a number of small work areas, which are used for nurture groups, SEN, music, independent learning and meetings. |
